Big Update for Students: JKBOSE Proposes Two Math Books for Class 10
Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education has proposed a major change for Class 10 students by introducing two levels of mathematics papers, Basic and Standard. The board has invited public feedback before taking a final decision. Officials said the new system aims to reduce pressure on students who do not plan to study mathematics in higher classes.
A senior JKBOSE official told Kashmir News Observer that the idea is simple. Students who do not want to choose mathematics in Class 11 should not be tested on the same difficulty level as those who plan to continue. The official said that this approach is meant to lower stress and give students more flexibility.
The Director Academics of JKBOSE has issued a formal notification seeking opinions from teachers, parents, students, academicians and civil society. The proposal has been framed in line with the National Education Policy 2020 which encourages less stressful board examinations and better assessment systems.
As per the proposed plan, the Class 10 board examination will have one mathematics exam with two levels. Students will choose either Basic or Standard. The Standard paper will follow the current difficulty level, while the Basic paper will be easier. Students who want to study mathematics in Class 11 must choose the Standard level.
The board clarified that the syllabus, classroom teaching and internal assessment will remain the same for both levels. Students will study all topics in class and then choose the level they wish to appear in during the board exam.
JKBOSE has also proposed flexible options for students who change their mind. A student who opts for Standard but fails can appear in the Bi Annual exam for either Basic or Standard. Students who opt for Basic and pass, but later want to study mathematics at a higher level, will be allowed to take a Standard compartment exam.
The board has requested all stakeholders to send their views within ten days of the notification. JKBOSE said the final decision will be taken only after reviewing public opinion.
